Figures Of Speech, Literary Terms

 


1. Simile : - 

Simile is a figure of Speech in which a comparison is made between two different objects which have at least one common point.

eg : So, Like, As

Use in sentence 

i) Life is like a dream.

ii) Her face is like a moon.

2. Metaphor : -

A Metaphor is a figure of speech in which a comparison is made between two different objects without using comparison words.

Using word :

i) Life is dream.

ii) He is the star of the family.

3. Personification : -

Personification is a figure of speech in which lifeless objects and abstract ideas are thought of as living beings.

eg : 

i) Love is blind.

ii) The truth sets upon the lips of dying man.

4. Apostrophe : -

Apostrophe is a direct address to the dead, to the absent and to the absent idea

eg : Calling 

O! , world o ! , Life o !

5. Hyperbole : -

Hyperbole is the figure of speech in which things or person are represented greater, better or worse than they actually are.

eg :

i) Their chief was mountain high.

ii) She shed Oceans of tears.

6. Oxymoron : -

Oxymoron is the figure of speech in which two opposite ideas are put together.

eg : 

i) Life is bitter sweet 

ii) Having nothing he has all.

7. Onomatopoeia : -

Onomatopoeia is the figure of speech in which sound suggests its meaning.

eg : -

i) The dog bards.

ii) The snake hisses.

8. Antithesis :

In Antithesis a striking opposition or contrast of words or sentiments is made in the same sentence.

eg :

i) United we stand, Divided we fall.

9. Alliteration : -

When two ore more than two words begin with the same letter or the syllable, it is known as alliteration.

eg :

How, high, his, highness, holds, his, haughty, head.]

10. Metonymy : -

Metonymy is a greek word, it is made to Meta+Onoma

In Metonymy a thing is called by something associated with it, as we sword for warrior and pen for author.

eg : 

i) The pen is mightier than the sword.

ii) You must address the chair. ( i.e. the chair man)

11. PUN : -

A  Pun is a play upon words. In it words are used in such a way that different meaning create humour admiration or surprise.

eg :

i) An ambassador a man who lies abroad for the good of his country.

12. Climax : -

Climax is the series of idea in the ascending order of importance.

eg :

I laugh, 

I run.

I leap. 

I sing. 

I dance for joy.

13. Assonance : -

In Assonance, vowel sounds are repeated in a line.

eg : Dear, Come, near and  Fear not

T.S. Eliot's Life and works

T.S. Eliot Thomas Sterns Eliot was born on 26 september 1888 at st. Louis Missouri an industrial town  in USA . His grandfather established unitarian church at St. Louis. He was a man at academic interest and in course of time, he became the founder of washington University in America. The Poet's father was a successful breaks traders. He married Charlotte Sterns who herself was an educated woman of very interest. T.S. Eliot interested in his scholarly business quality from his parent.  Primary Education : He was successful education at St. Louis school and from  their to Howard University from the very beginning, He was an intelligent student and began written at a tender age. The poet of Howard , he was very genius . He staged from 1906-1910 there. he went France after graduating from the Howard University from their  he went to Germany where he came in contact with contemporary writers and studies their works.
